Folate Receptor Autoantibodies and Depression

Folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAA) are antibodies that attack the folate receptor, a protein that helps transport folate into the brain. Low levels of folate in the brain have been linked to depression. This blog post discusses the research on the link between FRAA and depression.

Folate Receptor Autoantibodies in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAAs) are prevalent in children with autism and their families suggesting a genetic risk factor. FRAAs block folate transport across blood brain barrier resulting in cerebral folate deficiency which can cause various developmental disorders including autism.

  • FRAT® (Folate Receptor Antibody Test) is a diagnostic blood test that screens for Folate Receptor Autoantibodies. Developed in the laboratory of Dr. Edward Quadros at the State University of New York (SUNY Downstate), FRAT® is the only assay that identifies BOTH blocking and binding Folate Receptor Autoantibodies. FRAT®, as published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and used in numerous clinical trials, is the world's leading assay of its kind.

The presence of Folate Receptor Autoantibodies suggests that folate (vitamin B9), which is an essential vitamin for proper growth and neurological function, is not being properly transported to the brain and into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Folate Receptor Autoantibodies have been found in Cerebral Folate Deficiency Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Depression, Schizophrenia as well as other neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Diagnosis of Folate Receptor Autoantibodies should be done as early as possible as this may affect treatment outcomes.

Please consult your physician for further information.
