Also known as <strong>leucovorin<\/strong> or <strong>5-formyltetrahydrofolate<\/strong>, it is a biologically active form of folate that does not rely solely on the folate receptor alpha (FR\u03b1) for cellular uptake. Instead, folinic acid can enter cells via alternative transport mechanisms, such as the <strong>reduced folate carrier (RFC)<\/strong> or other folate transporters such as the proton-coupled folate transporter.<\/p>\n<p>Folinic acid (leucovorin) shows promise in children with <a href=\"https:\/\/autism.fratnow.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-introduction-to-autism-spectrum-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism spectrum disorder (ASD)<\/a> who have <strong>folate receptor alpha (FR\u03b1) autoantibodies.<\/strong> This is because it can bypass the blocked folate transport system and restore cerebral folate levels, potentially improving neurological and behavioral symptoms. This is a very important point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. <b>Clinical Evidence Supporting Folinic Acid in ASD with FRAAs<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"mr-left-ol-40-list mr-left-ul-40\">\n<li><strong>Open-label and controlled studies<\/strong> (e.g., Frye et al., 2013, 2018) show improvements in <strong>communication, behavior, and attention<\/strong> in ASD children with FRAAs after folinic acid supplementation.
